Running with Tom

Tom Steinfort from TODAY is an ambassador for the world’s largest fun run,
The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac. This August 11th he’ll be one of more than 80,000 people doing the iconic 14km distance from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach.
We caught up with Tom about his training, heroes and keeping fit for TV…

Can you tell us a little bit about your philosophy when it comes to fitness?

You will never regret a workout.

How do you maintain a fit and active lifestyle with your gruelling TV schedule?
My trick is to go straight to the gym after work, just take the discussion away from it and make the decision autopilot.  Otherwise I don’t go at all because the lure of the couch is just too distracting once I get home.

How are you preparing for City2Surf?

Procrastination so far, but hoping to get serious soon… maybe.  The great thing about City2Surf is that it’s for people of all fitness levels, so just showing up is the most important thing you need to do.

Do you consider yourself a natural runner?

No I’m definitely not!  I have the attention span of a toddler on a sugar high, so get bored very easily on long runs.  That’s why I love the City2Surf, nothing beats the atmosphere and entertainment on course, before you know it you’re at the finish line.

What’s your usual workout routine?

I mostly do about 45 minutes of cross training at the gym, and sometimes trudge the coastal run near my house.

For anyone participating in City2Surf for the first time, what advice can you offer?

The run is just the warm up, the bar queue at the Beach Rd Hotel is the main test of endurance.

What’s your go to food/meal to fuel up?

I’ve never met a carb I didn’t like… pasta, bread, muesli, pizza – you name it, I’ll devour it

If you could run the City2Surf with any 3 sporting legends, alive or passed, who would they be and why?

That’s an easy one! Dustin Martin because I’m a feral Richmond fan, Lionel Messi because he’s the GOAT, and David Boon because at least then I wouldn’t come last.

If you could have one song play as you cross the finish line, what would it be?

Hot Chocolate – I believe in miracles

It’s 11 August and you’ve just crossed the City2Surf finish line – what is your first thought
