The MOD Cold Press Juicer has won design awards concurrently for years now and sales mooned during COVID. Is it really that good? We put it to the test.
For the last few years juicing has been quietly gaining in popularity, for good reason. It’s very good for you. Juicing regimes can help induce fat loss, boost immunity and energy levels, and even help kick caffeine addictions. Skip around YouTube and you’ll see a plethora of people who have taken juicing to an insane level.
This is primarily because juicing allows you to make personal nutrient supplements just right for you. Put another way, you can specifically tailor the nutrients you need for the health benefit you want. For example, if you want to boost your immune system (and who doesn’t these days), no problem, juice up an orange, lemon, carrot, cucumber with turmeric and fresh ginger. Add some chia seeds and a pinch of cayenne. And presto, you’ve got an immunity booster loaded with vitamin A and C and a host of good anti: bacterial, inflammatory and oxidant properties. After a couple of weeks of juicing every day, I found it a great way to get a “hit” of nutrients tailored for all things health-related: recovery, immunity, energy boost and sleep improvement.
Types of Juicers
Juicers generally come in two types: cold pressed — sometimes called masticating or slow juicers — and centrifugal or fast juicers. There’s a big difference. Put simply, centrifugal “spins” the juice out, while cold-pressed crushes the juice out.
The problem is centrifugal juicers need a high rpm to extract the juice, which creates heat. Heat degrades the nutrients in the food. Not what you want.
Cold-pressed juicers crush the food against a screen, retaining more nutrients and increasing storage time for juice. There’s no significant heat with a cold-ressed juicer, so more nutrients are retained. But the biggest advantage of a slow juicer is its ability to process leafy greens like mint, kale, sprouts, wheat grass, and other herbs. The slow crushing action helps extract the maximum nutrients from the vegetables, fruits and leafy greens.

We were sent the MOD’s cold pressed juicer for a review. The MOD Cold Press Juicer is the Ferrari of Juicers. It’s won a swag of awards and been touted by influencers for a couple of years as the bee’s knees in juicers.
First thing that struck us during de-boxing was that it’s well-made and sturdy. It feels solid, even the moulded plastic elements. Putting it together was easy with the well-written and illustrated instructions. Everything clips into place firmly and in five minutes you’re looking at a very aesthetic kitchen appliance, that is, by the way, 100-percent Australian owned.
The Mod Juice
Easily the most painful part of juicing is preparing the small chunks of food to juice. In slow juicers I’ve used in the past, the chopping gets down to 1cm x 1cm thanks to a small chute. The MOD Cold Press Juicer however has a wide-mouth chute, enabling easy processing of extra chunky pieces, and speeding up the process considerably. Turning the juicer on, you immediately notice how quiet the machine is: a boiling kettle is louder. This is great for early risers who don’t like to wake their household. Feeding the machine was simple and surprisingly fast. Juice pours out one side, while pulp is pushed out the other. The pulp can be used for a host of recipes like carrot cake, soup broth, smoothies or even clothes dye.
When done, the disassembly was fast and washing up was a cinch.
And then came the moment of truth: the tastes test: Delicious. I can honestly say it was one of the nicest juices I’ve had.
And the Verdict is…
The MOD Appliances brand was developed by a team of wellness enthusiasts who know their stuff.
